GEF is designated as the 'financial mechanism' for three international
treaties and collaborates closely with other treaties and agreements
to reach common goals. GEF receives guidance from the conferences
of parties (CoPs) to these International Conventions on the policies,
program priorities, and eligibility criteria to be applied for this
purpose. These conventions are:
In May 2001 the Conference of Plenipotentiaries on the Stockholm
Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) designated
GEF as the financial mechanism on an interim basis. The POPs Convention
was opened for signature at the conference in Stockholm.

The GEF collaborates closely with other treaties and agreements
to reach common goals
Initiatives that cut across GEF's four focal areas to address
land degradation are pursued in cooperation with the Convention
to Combat Desertification.
GEF assistance is enabling the Russian Federation and nations
in Eastern Europe to phase out the use of ozone-destroying chemicals
in partnership with the Montreal Protocol of the Vienna Convention
on Ozone Layer Depleting Substances.
- GEF also assists initiatives to reverse the degradation of international
waters by realizing the objectives of a mosaic of regional and
global waters agreements.
